Ship Ablaze: The Tragedy of the Steamboat General Slocum, by Edward T. O'Donnell
On June 15, 1904, over 1,300 Lower East Side residents boarded the steamship General Slocum on their way to a summer picnic excursion on Eaton's Neck, Long Island. Tragically, a fire erupted on board just minutes into the trip, killing over 1,000 passengers in what was New York's deadliest disaster prior to September 11, 2001. Explore artifacts from Huntington's steamship resort days as we unravel the mayhem and corruption that led to the Slocum tragedy.
$15 participant; Free for museum members and patrons of participating libraries.
