On June 15, 1904, over 1,300 Lower East Side residents boarded the steamship General Slocum on their way to a summer picnic excursion on Eaton's Neck, Long Island. Tragically, a fire erupted on board just minutes into the trip, killing over 1,000 passengers in what was New York's deadliest disaster prior to September 11, 2001.
