Mothers come is all shapes and sizes, as we discover in this remarkable book. Part nature writing, part memoir, Soundings interweaves stories from Cunningham's time spent with an Iñupiaq family in Alaska and a journey she made several years later to study grey whales with a mischievous oddler in tow.
